The auditorium was packed, but despite that, it was very quiet. The present gazed cold-bloodily at the empty stage with the medical symbol on the wall, and only occasionally exchanged whispers. But when the dean showed up, all grew still, as if on command.

“I’m glad to see so many new faces in our faculty.” The dean started her speech, after rising to the podium. “You’ve chosen a path far from easy.”
The freshmen followed each her movement without blinking, and swallowed each word.

“Aside from our university being bi-lingual, “She continued her lecture. My class demands specifically hard backs and sitting capability, because the flexibility you’ve been used to at school is far from the best quality needed to pass most of the subjects in the program.

The students twisted in their seats, trying to strike a pose in order to show that very serious mindset for meeting the new demands.

“Those who practice idleness will be expelled mercilessly. Same goes for persons who show improper behavior. For example, no threats of any sorts are permitted on the campus.” She clarified menacingly, setting her glasses straight.

The public hissed in indignation, presenting a unified rejection of those characteristics.

“Also, we lack tolerance for intolerance, bigotry or pretense. We always stay ourselves! Therefore, those who feel like adapting or shifting their skin in favor of circumstances, spare the effort. We’ll teach you to renounce the ground boundaries and groveling, or our ways will part soon enough.
The hall filled again with whispers and venomous comments about those groveling fit-ins.

“But fear not.” The orator suddenly smiled. “Our teachers, including myself, will teach you all that you need to know for future success. That means: standing steady on your feet, walking the straightest path and holding everything in your hands. I’m sure you all shall succeed!”

No applauding followed. Her smile grew even wider, and after looking at the attentive students, the dean gave them a barely visible nod of approval.

“Now, I shall take my leave, but not before wishing you luck in the upcoming studies.”

After finishing the opening speech, the dean of Anguin university spread and folded her hood gracefully. After that, she slithered of the stage with royal grace and left, followed by the unblinking looks of the entranced auditory.

The listeners set to leave too, mesmerized by the dazzling welcoming, already expecting the new knowledge and skills. Turns out, there’s so much to learn while majoring serpentology, when you’re such a young and inexperience snake.
