Vindland

Wends (Old English: Winedas; Old Norse: Vindr; German: Wenden, Winden; Danish: vendere; Swedish: vender; Polish: Wendowie) is a historical name for Slavs living near Germanic settlement areas. It does not refer to a homogeneous people, but to various peoples, tribes or groups depending on where and when it is used.

In the Middle Ages the term "Wends" often referred to West Slavs and Slovenes living within the Holy Roman Empire, though not always. The name has possibly survived in Finnic languages

(Finnish: Venаjа, Estonian: Vene, Karelian: Veneа) denoting Russia.

(?Vena in Austria?   ----  wends? Venaja? Vene? Venea?)

According to one theory, Germanic peoples first applied this name to the ancient Veneti, and then after the migration period they transferred it to their new neighbours, the Slavs.

For the medieval Scandinavians, the term Wends (Vender) meant Slavs living near the southern shore of the Baltic Sea (Vendland), and the term was therefore used to refer to Polabian Slavs like the Obotrites, Rugian Slavs, Veleti/Lutici and Pomeranian tribes.

For people living in the medieval Northern Holy Roman Empire and its precursors, especially for the Saxons, a Wend (Wende) was a Slav living in the area west of the River Oder, an area later entitled Germania Slavica, settled by the Polabian Slav tribes (mentioned above) in the north and by others, such as the Sorbs and the Milceni, in the middle.

The Germans in the south used the term Winde instead of Wende and applied it, just as the Germans in the north, to Slavs they had contact with; e.g., the Polabians from Bavaria Slavica or the Slovenes (the names Windic March and Windisch Feistritz still bear testimony to this historical denomination).

Following the 8th century, the Frankish kings and their successors organised nearly all Wendish land into marches. This process later turned into the series of crusades. By the 12th century, all Wendish lands had become part of the Holy Roman Empire. In the course of the Ostsiedlung, which reached its peak in the 12th to 14th centuries, this land was settled by Germans and reorganised.

Due to the process of assimilation following German settlement, many Slavs west of the Oder adopted the German culture and language. Only some rural communities which did not have a strong admixture with Germans and continued to use West Slavic languages were still termed Wends. With the gradual decline of the use of these local Slavic tongues, the term Wends slowly disappeared, too.

Some sources claim that in the 13th century there were actual historic people called Wends or Vends living as far as northern Latvia (east of the Baltic Sea) around the city of Wenden.

Henry of Livonia
(Henricus de Lettis)
in his 13th-century Latin chronicle described
a tribe called the
Vindi.

(Vindi --- ***? winds --?--- vindi, vinds?)
(?* -- Windsor  -- wind --- windi - wendi - vindi - wends ---??)

Today, only one group of Wends still exists: the Lusatian Sorbs in present-day eastern Germany.

Veneti (Slavs)
The term "Wends" derived from the Roman-era people called in Latin Veneti, Venedi or Venethi, in Greek ;;;;;;;; / Ouenedai. This people was mentioned by Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy as inhabiting the Baltic coast.

Etymology of the ethnonym Veneti

The Roman empire under Hadrian (117–138 AD), showing the location of the Veneti (Venedi) east of the upper Vistula region (south-eastern Poland and western Ukraine).

The ethnonym would then be etymologically related to words as
Latin

venus, -eris 'love, passion, grace' and in later forms 'beloved, friendly';

Sanskrit
vanas- 'lust, zest', vani- 'wish, desire';

Old Irish
fine (< Proto-Celtic *wenja) 'kinship, kinfolk, alliance, tribe, family';

Old Norse
vinr,

Old Saxon,
Old High German
wini,

Old Frisian,
Old English
wine
'friend',

Norwegian
venn
'friend'.

The name "Wends"

was a historical designation
for Slavs
living near Germanic settlement areas.

Also, the word

wend

meant water
in the Baltic Old Prussian language

suggests that

the Wends were
those who lived by the water or waters.

In the Estonian and Finnish
names for
Russia —
Venemaa and
Venaja
—possibly originate from the name of the
Veneti.

According to the 20th century linguist
Julius Pokorny,
the ethnonym
Veneti
(singular *Venetos)
is derived from
the Proto-Indo-European root
*wenhi-,
'to strive; to wish for, to love'.

As shown by the comparative material,
the Germanic languages may have had two terms of different origin:

Old High German

Winida
'Wende'
points to Pre-Germanic
*wenhetos,

while Lat.-Germ.

Venedi
(as attested in Tacitus)

and Old English

Winedas
'Wends'
call for Pre-Germanic
*wenhietos.

Origins
He was originally from Meulles or nearby Le Sap, in Calvados, Normandy. He was a younger son of Gilbert, Count of Brionne and Count of Eu, in Normandy.

Career
Together with his eldest brother Richard FitzGilbert, in 1066 Baldwin accompanied William Duke of Normandy in the Norman Conquest of England.

Following William the Conqueror's successful siege of the Saxon city of Exeter,
that king appointed Baldwin castellan of the newly built

Exeter Castle was thenceforth the official seat of the Sheriff of Devon. King William I also granted him the very large feudal barony of Okehampton in Devon, at the caput of which he built Okehampton Castle.

William the Conqueror

William I
 (c. 1028 – 9 September 1087), usually known as
William the Conqueror
and sometimes
William the Bastard,
 was
the first Norman King of England,
reigning from 1066 until his death in 1087.

A descendant of Rollo, he was Duke of Normandy from 1035 onward.

William was the son of the unmarried Robert I, Duke of Normandy, by Robert's mistress Herleva

Family and children

William and his wife Matilda of Flanders
had at least

nine children:

- Robert was born between 1051 and 1054, died 10 February 1134.
 Duke of Normandy,
married Sybilla of Conversano, daughter of Geoffrey, Count of Conversano.

- Richard was born before 1056, died around 1075.

- William was born between 1056 and 1060, died 2 August 1100.
King of England, killed in the New Forest.

- Henry was born in late 1068, died 1 December 1135.
King of England,
married
Edith of Scotland,
daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland.
His second wife was Adeliza of Louvain.

- Adeliza (or Adelida, Adelaide) died before 1113, reportedly betrothed to Harold Godwinson, probably a nun of Saint Leger at Preaux.

- Cecilia (or Cecily) was born before 1066, died 1127,
Abbess of Holy Trinity, Caen.

- Matilda was born around 1061, died perhaps about 1086.
Mentioned in Domesday Book as a daughter of William.

- Constance
died 1090,
married Alan IV Fergent, Duke of Brittany.

-  Adela
died 1137,
married Stephen, Count of Blois.

-  (Possibly) Agatha,
the betrothed of Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile.

There is no evidence of any illegitimate children born to William.

William the Conqueror and sometimes William the Bastard,
was the first Norman King of England,
reigning from 1066 until his death in 1087.
 A descendant of Rollo, -

Rollo or Gaange Rolf
(Norman: Rou; Old Norse: Hrolfr; French: Rollon; c. 860 – c. 930 AD)
was a Viking who became the first ruler of Normandy, a region of France.
He is sometimes called
the first Duke of Normandy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollo

William was the son of the unmarried
Robert I, Duke of Normandy,
by Robert's mistress
Herleva

Robert the Magnificent (French: le Magnifique,
 22 June 1000 – 1–3 July 1035),
was the Duke of Normandy from 1027 until his death in 1035.

He was the son of
Richard II and brother of Richard III, who preceded him as the Duke.

Robert was the son of
Richard II of Normandy
and Judith, daughter of Conan I, Duke of Brittany.

He was also grandson of Richard I of Normandy, great-grandson of William I of Normandy and great-great grandson of Rollo, the Viking who founded Normandy.

According to the medieval Irish text An Banshenchas and Icelandic sources, another daughter, Cadlinar (Kathleen) was born in Scotland (probably to a Scots mother)
and married an Irish prince named Beollan mac Ciarmaic,
later King of South Brega (Lagore).

A daughter of Cadlinar and Beollan named Nithbeorg was abducted by an Icelandic Viking named Helgi Ottarsson, and became the mother of the poet Einarr .

A genetic investigation
into the remains of Rollo's grandson,
Richard the Fearless, and his great-grandson,
Richard the Good,
was announced in 2011
with the intention of discerning the origins of the historic Viking leader.

On 29 February 2016 Norwegian researchers opened Richard the Good's tomb and found his lower jaw with eight teeth in it.

Unfortunately, the skeletal remains in both graves turned out to significantly predate Rollo and therefore are not related to him.

Rollon
Rolllo
