Dear Mrs. Hilton,
It is a pleasure to read scientific thoughts produced by a woman.

A large debt of gratitude was owing here; but the intercourse of the last seven years, the equal footing and perfect unreserve which had soon followed Isabella's marriage,

Here have we been, the whole winter and spring, completely duped, fancying ourselves
all on an equal footing of truth and honor, with two people in the midst of us who may have been carrying round, comparing and sitting in judgment on sentiments and words that were never meant for both to hear.

I must beg to add, that in every point of worldly advantage he is, at least, on an equal footing with yourself, if not on a much better one, and that unless I hear this question discussed with becoming temper and moderation, I decline hearing any more said upon the subject.'

Icarus is recalled from heaven by the run. Love is so startlingly real that it takes rank upon an equal footing of reality with the consciousness of personal existence.

One of the “little things” (among many others) that immediately betray a Russian as a non-native speaker are the English articles. Even to me, who has lived out of English in the past quarter century it’s obvious that you are not friends with this essential part of English. I don’t know why. Probably because your native tongue is Russian. I sent pieces of your stories to my American friends. They all said that they sound queer to them. Sort of right but, rather un-American.

You know only too well that sometimes the native speakers use articles and sometimes they don’t. And there’s no telling when and why to use them. There must be just “the feel of things” . It seems to be missing in your case. I’d like to see you physics texts.

S.Ye.

You can safely dispose with the "an" in the passage you question. Suffice is to say that the entire sentence "Laws of nature admit evolution backward in time on equal footing" had been adopted without change from an article by Sir Rudolf Peierls...
If you feel better taking me for a native Russian speaker, I have no problem with this. I cannot disclose my identity for the silly reason that in flesh I am rather famous. Enough on the topic.

Men who had come, men who were coming, met there on equal footing. Among them, as years ago among my schoolmates, I found my place.
