The survey involved 39 people - both Russian-speaking and English-speaking respondents, as well as several people who speak other languages. The main purpose of the survey was to compare the characteristics of individual perception of symbols in water by different people. To do this, people were asked to answer the question: “What letters / numbers do you see in these images?”. All in all, 30 water images (waterpics) were considered.
All the results obtained were compared with what I saw in these photos. But at the same time, I took into account which answers would be the most common, regardless of my answers. People didn’t know the correct answers in advance. When calculating how many people see one letter / number, all people who wrote this letter in the answer were taken into account. When calculating how many people see two letters/numbers, only people who see those two letters/numbers were taken into account. People seeing three or more letters/numbers at the same time were counted separately.
There were 168 symbols in the quiz, 33 of them were Russian letters. The total number of correctly guessed symbols ranged from 0.6% to 58.3%. Many words were fully recognized by a few people (sometimes by majority). Full recognition of the correct variant of letters/words was observed in 18 photos out of 30. The percentage of people who recognized these words completely: from 3% to 85%, on average 25%. The maximum percentage of people who fully recognized the words: 33%, 51%, 85%, 54%, 67%. And in hard-to-read photos, the feature of recognition was that people correctly named individual letters (1-2), but not the whole word. The percentage of people who saw identically 2-3 letters in words: 92, 31, 34, 64, 64, 61, 98, 30, 29, 24, 65, 67, 40, 28, 24, 49, 67, 77, 67, 41, 28, 41, 46 %.
Most often, in the results of one photo’s survey, there is one main answer’s variant indicated by several respondents, and additional variants that are similar in meaning. Quite often, additional answer’s variants are similar to the main variant or complement it.
All this indicates the objective existence of textual information in water glares and the possibility of further scientific work in this direction.
