Abstract
This paper is a continuation of a series of publications (Kordikova 1998-2000) devoted to the analysis of a wide diversity of shell patterns and evolutionary strategies in the Chelonia. The morphological disparity of turtles can be explained by heterochronic shifts in the early stages of ontogeny (Kordikova & Reif 2001a). The study of ontogenetic series in extant turtles referred to Cheloniidae, Dermochelyidae, Trionychidae, Cyclanorbidae and Carettochelyidae shows that the underdevelopment or delayed ossification of one structure is often combined with the hypertrophy of another one. The systematic status of certain groups of turtles is discussed, and efforts are made to standardize the terminology of the shell elements.
Kurzfassung
Diese Arbeit ist eine Fortsetzung einer Reihe von Publikationen (Kordikova 1998-2000), die sich mit der Analyse der grossen Diversitaet von Panzermorphologien und evolutionaeren Strategien der Chelonia befassen. Die morphologische Diversitaet der Schildkroeten laesst sich durch heterochrone Verschiebungen in den fruehen Stadien der Ontogenese grossenteils erklaeren (Kordikova & reif 2001a). Die Untersuchung ontogenetischer Serien rezenter Schildkroeten der Familien Cheloniidae, Dermochelyidae, Trionychidae, Cyclanorbidae und Carettochelyidae zeigt, dass Unterentwicklung oder verzoegerte Ossifikation einer Struktur oft mit der Hypermorphose anderer Strukturen gekoppelt ist. Der systematische Status einiger Schildkroeten-Gruppen wird diskutiert. Ein weiterer Versuch zur Vereinheitlichung der Terminologie des Schildkroetenpanzers wird gemacht.
