Abstract
A reanalysis of skull roof and palate of Proganochelys confirms the parareptilian status of ancient turtles. A paedomorphic origin of the ancient turtle palate pattern from that of a basal pareiasauroid lineage is suggested. The main types of palate dentition (acrodont, hyperacrodont, prothecodont, pseudoacrodont, ridge thecodont and true thecodont) as well as the origin of tooth attachment in tetrapods are discussed. Skull characters, that are considered most important in phylogenetic systematics of the lower tetrapods, are evaluated.
Kurzfassung
Die neuerliche Analyse von Schaedeldach und Palatinalmorphologie von Proganochelys bestaetigt den parareptilischen Status der basalen Schildkroeten. Eine paedomorphe Entwicklung des Palatinalbaus urspruenglicher Schildkroeten aus einer primitiven pareiasauroiden Linie wird angenommen. Die hauptsaechlichen Typen der Palatinalbezahnung (acrodont, hyperacrodont, prothecodont, pseudoacrodont, thecodont und echt thecodont) sowie der Ursprung der Zahnbefestigung bei Tetrapoden werden untersucht. Die Schaedelmerkmale, die fuer die phylogenetische Systematik der niederen Tetrapoden als am bedeutsamsten erachtet werden, werden diskutiert.
