Now I’m gonna add a few extra details to yesterday’s note. At first, it’s important to emphasize that people who were in opposition to the noble put in their notion of ‘good’ kindness instead of ‘power,’ and what was called ‘weak’ by the noble transformed into ‘evil.’ So power no longer stands as an ideal because anyone who has ultimate power may be labeled as an evil person. It’s not quite clear why you can’t cultivate kindness and power simultaneously on a personal landscape, but anyway—
I think Dr. Sadler missed a significant point which is not obvious at the first glance, though may be easily derived from Nietzsche’s text after some consideration. For warriors there is a contradiction between power and weakness; for herd, between kind and evil; but for priests it’s wise and foolish. Hence, when priests teach the herd that only kindness matters and bloody warriors, despite their power, are evil, the warriors protect themselves forcing the herd to believe that wisdom has nothing to do with kindness either; therefore, those who have superior intelligence are also as evil as those who wield power.
Here we can see the roots of the contradiction between science and mysticism. An aesthetic ideal for science is rationalism, and the words good and bad can be equalized to rational and irrational. However, mysticism says, ‘No, no, no—rational means evil! We—the herd—are humans, so let’s go to the transcendent.’
It seems to me that Nietzsche’s idea was a follow. ‘Look! There is no such thing as kindness in itself. The foolish powerful use the term to slander on the wise and the powerless wise use the term to slander on the powerful. In the result the herd has become radically suspicious and convinced itself that only it, the herd, is the absolute virtue.’
