A friend in need is a friend indeed

This story happened with one young man, whose name was Gerry. He was 21 years old and he had a girlfriend. But they lived in different cities.

They had met each other at the university. Gerry studied at the faculty of Engineering and his girlfriend, whose name was Lucy, studied at the faculty of Arts.

At first, they didn't like each other. Lucy thought that Gerry, as the rest guys from the faculty of Engineering, was boring, stubborn and that he wasn't an outstanding person.

As for Gerry, he thought that Lucy, as many of other girls, was a shallow and naive girl. And the fact that she studied at the faculty of Arts, not just served the reason for him to think so, but made him think that she wouldn't talk with him.

Nevertheless, Gerry very soon realized that he had fallen in love with Lucy. He realized it deep down. But he didn't bring himself to admit that. After some time had passed, Gerry was not able to hold his feelings back any more and he brought himself to ask her out on a date. But she refused him. Three times in a row.

Gerry didn't give up and continued to ask her out on a date with him stubbornly. Eventually, she gave up. Lucy accepted his suggestion. And very soon they became inseparable.

But let us return to our story. At the university, where Gerry and Lucy studied, there was vacation. It was Easter vacation and many of students went to their homes. Gerry and some other guys stayed in the hall of residence.

Gerry knew that there would be Lucy's birthday soon. But she was at home and he was in the hall of residence. He wanted to make a pleasant surprise to her: he wanted to come to Lucy on her birthday. But he didn't have enough money to afford it.

He was down and out. He didn't know what to do. And suddenly it occured to him, that he might ask his best friend for a help. His best friend, Harry, was saving up money for some details for his car. And so he had money. Gerry understood that it wasn't good enough on his part, but he didn't see any other way. And he asked Harry to meet with him.

When they met they were glad to see each other. Harry studied in another city and so they hadn't seen each other for a long time. At first, they were talking about their studies, sharing news, remembering the past. And, suddenly, Gerry broke off. He went pale. And after making a short pause, he pulled himself together and said:

 - Harry, I'm so sorry for asking you for such thing... Eh... Could you lend me some money? please...

Harry looked at Gerry in surprise. And then, after curling his lip, he asked:

 - And what do you need money for?

Gerry explained him the situation. And looked at Harry hopefully.

 - Hmm... I see what you are driving at. Do you really like her? And... Are you sure that she loves you? Because... If you are not, I won't give you money for such a meaningless thing, - he said.

 - I am sure in that! I am sure that we love each other, I am sure that she does and I am sure that I do. I beg you!.. If you don't help me, I won't be able to go to her. And I will feel even worse than I do now. I will feel so terrible that I will probably commit suicide!..

Harry looked at Gerry. He looked at him with some kind of care for Gerry and, at the same time, he looked at him puzzled.

 - Well, old chap, of course, I will help you. You are my best friend. And, besides, you deserve happiness. You are a good man.

Gerry was very glad. He became happier at once, and started thanking his friend.

 - Harry, you are a real friend! Thank you very much. I will be willing to return all the money which you will lend me.

Harry was, in a way, taken aback by such a sudden change of Gerry's mood. He could swear that even had seen how Gerry had rubbed his hands together, satisfied. And he shrugged his shoulders and said:

 - Well... As they say: "A friend in need is a friend indeed", - Harry smiled. - I am very glad I was able to help you.

As it had been agreed, Harry lent the rest sum of money, which Gerry didn't have, and the latter returned it after some time had passed.

When Gerry turned up with a present in his hands on Lucy's porch, she flung herself on his neck, kissed him and she said that she was madly happy that she had met him. And they spent their time ideally on that day.

Gerry was extremelly thankful to his friend Harry. He was lucky to have such a real friend. A friend, whom he could rely on at any time.
