The difficult decision. София

It's strange, how with one flick of a button, an innocent creature would disappear, its a soul, gone forever.

It was seven months ago. My friend Jess was playing with her pal; Monty. All was fine, until she came up with an idea for a rather dangerous game.

Monty would pull Jess across the grass in their garden, under the grand oak tree, beneath the satin blue sky. The clouds would part to let the sun shine through, almost as a spotlight for the two below. Jess would sit inside the barrel and Monty would drag her around the neighbourhood until tea time when their mum would call them in. Every day of summer they would have such a fun time until...

Once more they were racing down the hill, the wind in their hair, smiling, laughing, enjoying themselves, when they reached the corner of the road. The barrel tripped over a rock and sent Jess flying into the bushes. She was not hurt, she was not damaged, she was not crying, she was fine. But as she looked over, across the street at Monty - he was hit.

Of course she didn't know that the road was not for pedestrians but for cars only. How could she know that? After all she was only 10 years old. The Ice-cream van hit Monty clear and he just lay there staring blankly up, weeping a little to himself.

Three days later was when the decision had to be made. The only person who could do that was Jess, since she was the closest with Monty. It was a difficult decision, nobody said it wasn't, not one that a 10-year-old girl should have to make. Monty was in the hospital and the doctors  had said that after such a brutal accident he would be in too much pain to carry on.

So Jess struggled to decide whether her beloved companion would end his life in this building or struggle endlessly to live his life like the rest. Jess knew it was the right thing to do and she said, "yes", agreeing to put down her friend.

And just like that, with one flick of a button a soul, an innocent creature would be gone. That dog meant everything to her, but this is the end. Gone. Forever.
