Letter Zyu (Буква зю) – russian phraseme, meaning strange (unnatural) position of the human body. This is a relatively new idiom, which becomes in the evolution of new values.

The origin of the expression
Hypothesis about the origin of the phrase expressed a candidate of Philology A. V. Zelenin in an article in the journal "Russian speech".<ref name="Зеленин">{{cite journal |author=A. V. Zelenin, a candidate of Philology|title=Letter Zyu|journal=«Russian speech (journal [[Russian Academy of He believes that its origin must idiom films about Zorro, the hallmark of which was the letter Z, and that it has been extended to 70–80s among students. According to him, his name letter zyu acquired by replacing the name of Latin letter Z last two sounds on the sound "Yu (Cyrillic)". Zelenin believes that this change occurred under the influence of Greek letters Mu and Nu, the phonetic form of which (in his view) was amazing with students.

In itself, the phonetic combination of "zyu" is rather unusual (rare) in Russian language. So L. V. Uspensky in 1973 in the book "Under the law the letter"<ref>{{cite journal |author=L. V. == Evolution of expression ==

Zelenin said that, initially, in 1980s, the phrase "the letter zyu" denoted a bent position of the human body, was distributed among the car owners who spend a lot of time for the repair. Later, in the late 80's – it's a phraseme of entered into the dictionary dacha owners and came to mean to long-term work in a flexed position on the land]. This usage (without reference to the dacha or automobiles) is widespread not only in the spoken language, but also in the press and literature.

During the evolution of idiom distanced from the original value "resembling the letter Z" and came to mean curvature at all. Now, this expression is used to refer to any object located in a curved, strange state.

In the mid-1990s, the expression has penetrated into journalism, becoming a more abstract meaning of "any curved objects". According to A. V. Zelenin, combination "letter zyu" in the near future will be in vocabularies.

However, the expression "the letter zyu" distributed only in the Russian language in Russia, to a lesser extent, in the former Soviet Union. Thus, the idiom (zignuty) yak letter zyu attracted the attention of the Kharkov philologist N. F. Umantseva.<ref>{{cite journal |author=N. F. Umantseva|title=With antropohnostychnoyi comparative phraseology village Tsyrkun in Kharkiv|journal=Bulletin of Kharkov State University names V. N. Karamzinа|year=2009|pages=182|month=57 In the Russian-speaking community of foreign countries (outside the former Soviet Union) letter zyu is not popular. According to A. V. Zelenin, this is due to find the Russian people surrounded by the Latin alphabet, which reduces the possibility of a different, ironic look at the letter Z.
