Евгений Онегин. Отрывок. Редакция И. Смирновой

One day Onegin, my dear friend,
Received that bad report from relations as well-
The life of his uncle was going to the end,
So he wanted his nephew to say farewell.
And after Eugene read the letter
Immediately he rode off
 To see his uncle, quick as fire;
He realised, in his desire-
For money he will suffer much,
And yawn, and sigh, become a liar.
(On this behalf you’ve read so much)
But having come to uncle’s village
He found him the man in death-
As earthly tribute more than less.

The uncle’s court was full of servants;
From far and near, from all the places,
Around him his friends and foes
Death eaters – look at their scornful faces!
The corpse was buried – as t'was dead,
The guests and priests were eating and drinking,
And they dispersed just after that,
About their own needs were thinking.
And here’s Onegin - country lover,
The master of the plants and lands,
Of forests, waters resident. But before
He was against an order strongly,
And now's glad that he has changed
His way of life for something great.
